Wedding film photography

Post image for Wedding film photography

At the beginning of July I photographed a wedding for Emma and Ciaran at Lothian Chambers. As part of the “extras” we discussed one of the things they wanted was some film photography.

Anyone who knows me really well knows that my first love in photography is film photography. While I shoot digital nowadays for time and convenience there’s nothing for me like a beautifully processed medium format colour or black and white film. So I was really happy they asked me to take some film photos.

I chose to shoot with a Mamiya RB67 partly because of the cost but also because their lenses are really stunning for portraiture. I used to own a Hasslelblad 503CW and while I love the square format and the Zeiss lenses are simply out of this world in terms of quality they’re perhaps too contrasty/sharp for weddings.

So below is a selection of film photos taken at Emma and Ciaran’s weddings. If I remember correctly all of the colour negatives were taken using Kodak Portra 160VC colour neg, the indoor black and white photos with Ilford FP400 and the outside black and white photos with Fuji 100 Across (my favourite film ever!).

Hope you like these.

I like the composition of the above photo and the dust on the film gives it a real vintage look. This photo highlights one of the reasons photographers love digital. A lot less dust!

Please note with all of these photos I haven’t done any post processing on them. If you see dust spots, that’s part of the scanning process. Of course final prints don’t have any dust on them at all. These are how the films looked after scanning them on an extremely high resolution Hasselblad X1 scanner.

Also the camera used was a Mamiya RB67 which while a large camera is fantastic for portraits. We used Ilford FP400 indoors, Kodak Portra 160VC for the colour negative and Fuji 100 Across for the outdoor black and white photos.
