As you can see throughout this blog I really enjoy shooting panoramics. Something I’ve always wanted to try is shooting vertical panoramics and Edinburgh’s Old Town is surrounded by really fascinating Closes steeped in history.
Today is just an experiment with vertical panoramics using a very standard tripod head but completely level tripod. As a note I have since bought a proper panoramic header, ie a Really Right Stuff Ultimate Omni head but here is a few examples. In the coming months I’m hoping to shoot more of these so keep an eye on this blog for more photos.
The above isn’t my first attempt but it’s my favourite. I shot the above with a project in mind for University (when I studied there) and although the image has blown out highlights I like the composition and the blurred motion of people walking past. This was taken around 8am.
As a note, I did go to University for one year in 2008. One of the things I really want to do in the future is live and work in my wife’s country. Other parts of my blog rave about Taiwan but for me to work there I must have a degree, even though I’m married to a Taiwanese citizen.
I studied a HND in Photography in West Bromwich, Birmingham, for 2 years and learnt an awful lot about photography from both a practical and business sense but I thought Uni would be a formality. Unfortunately Uni turned out to be useless for me. I expected one of the biggest Universities in the country to have great facilities, great teaching and great links but it’s amusing how a college in a really nasty part of Birmingham can be better than Edinburgh.
I may go back to Uni in the future so I can get this degree but it won’t be to study photography and it hopefully won’t be the same University.
The above was the last vertical panoramic I shot today and this was the dirtiest. Most of the other closes are fairly clean but you can see the stream of brown water running down the left. That’s all I need to say.
Later note: As a further note to this post I’ve now applied to study a couple of courses at University. I really want to get this degree aas mentioned before as I really want to live in Liv’s country but also to learn more skills. One of the courses I’ve applied for is Chinese at Edinburgh University. I’ve learnt some Chinese from Liv but just as I struggle to give her a structured English lesson it’s hard for her to give me a structured Chinese lesson but it’s a language that will be essential to know in the future and also it’s extremely interesting).
If I go back to Uni, I’ll post what I’m doing.
