Today’s blog post is going to be a little shorter than normal as I’ve got a lot of work on right now but today’s wedding was actually my penultimate wedding of 2013. I photographed this lovely wedding for Amanda and Craig on the 28th December (the last wedding of the year was on the 31st) at the Apex International in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket area. This was my third wedding at this venue and it’s a really interesting venue. The hotel itself is really well laid out for weddings with just the ceremony and wedding breakfast taking place in the same room but the evening reception taking place elsewhere (speeds things up a lot). The hotel, especially from the Heights restaurant where all the weddings I’ve photographed there haven taken place has the most fantastic venues of Edinburgh Castle and the Grassmarket area.
All of the weddings I’ve photographed at this venue have been equally great to be part of and Amanda and Craig, although I didn’t talk to them an awful lot, were really lovely to work with. As a note December weddings at the Apex are quite challenging. The ceremony for this wedding took place at 2pm which didn’t leave us with an awful lot of daylight to work with and with the super cold wind we had on the day the outdoor photos were quite challenging but they turned out really lovely.
One other thing we tried to do with this wedding was a Beatles walk just like I did with Simon and Lorna’s wedding here before. A good part of wedding photography is luck (weather/traffic etc) and for the previous wedding the traffic were kind enough to stop and we got some really cool shots. This time we tried twice during the day to get that Beatles walk but the miserable traffic didn’t really stop this time. We tried a Beatles walk with just four of the men but this didn’t really work but I liked it when a lot of the ladies and men tried to do the walk at the same time. Not really Beatles walk but really funny nonetheless and that for me is a lot of what wedding photography should be.
So that’s it for this blog post. It was a really lovely wedding and everyone who I spoke to were really great and even my experience of the hotel this time was good. On previous visits to the Apex I’ve found some of the staff really rude and at the one wedding I did at the Apex the heating had broken and was on full blast all day but the staff I spoke to this time were really pleasant and nobody melted this time! Hope you like the photos.
