As a wedding photographer and especially one living in Scotland, I absolutely love shooting weddings in castles. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of castles around Scotland and many just around Edinburgh alone and while Edinburgh Castle is the most popular my favourite castle in the local area is Dalhousie Castle.
While it’s a castle on the outside and largely inside, it’s not a castle in the traditional sense nowadays but rather a hotel, albeit a really stunning hotel. Dalhousie Castle is located on the outskirts of Bonnyrigg which in itself is 8 miles of south of Edinburgh and resides in really lovely grounds but the hotel/castle itself is the highlight.
At the time of writing this blog post I’ve now photographed three weddings at Dalhousie Castle and all of the weddings have been really small affairs, which really suits the castle perfectly. Renee and Chuck came over from the USA to get married at Dalhousie Castle and they were absolutely lovely to deal with. Renee was really camera confident, Chuck a little less so, but with a little work on my part and with a lot of “my” humour they really relaxed and I think this really reflects in the photos.
I was only booked for two hours from just before the ceremony to a few ambient shots in the Library, so in effect I was booked for the Registry Office Wedding Package (my two hour package) but this worked out perfectly as I had a lot of work to do that day before the wedding so it meant I could go home in the evening and not be entirely worn out.
But in summary it was a really short wedding but everyone who I spoke to was really nice (especially in the case of Chuck and Renee but that was simply because I spent most of my time with just the two of them). The weather on the day was perfect and the venue absolutely beautiful. I’ve since photographed another wedding at Dalhousie Castle which I’ll post on my blog in due course which was very different but equally great.
