Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Chiang Mai
Going to Thailand last year for Christmas and New Year was one of the most awesome experiences of my life. I absolutely loved Thailand, from Bangkok’s busy but simply awesome everything to do attitude to Krabi’s amazing islands and Chiang Mai.
There are few things from Thailand that really stood out. I loved Bangkok with it’s amazing night markets (Chang Chui and Chatuchak to name just two) and the boat tour we did to Phi Phi Island was freaking awesome. I LOVED IT!!! The night time safari we did in Chiang Mai (will share this soon) was great fun but we absolutely loved the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary we did in Chiang Mai.
We booked this through Klook here and the day started with the tour guides picking us up from the airbnb we stayed at. They picked us up in the back of a Toyota Hilux and we drove a couple hours to the sanctuary (with a short break and some awesome food at a local service stop on the way) and when we got there they gave us a briefing and then the elephants came.
On the way to the sanctuary it was really cool, I sat right at the back and I was able to take photos of the local scenery and it was surprisingly comfortable. We shared this with a small group of Americans who seemed pretty cool. Amelia loved the trip there.
When the elephants arrived first a baby ran down the hill to us followed by it’s mum and basically told us she was there. From there we fed the elephants bananas, jumped in a mud pool, bathed in the river and then had lunch. Something we loved is all the group tours we did they always fed us and the food was good. Not quite fine dining Michelin star food but “wow that was good, I’m happy!”.
The elephants themselves were awesome, absolutely beautiful and super cute. Perhaps for us one of the best things about the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary is the staff seem to really care about the elephants. They talk to them, sing to them and genuinely seem to give them a lot of affection. Some might call this fake but I’m a pretty observant people and when the elephants were away from our tour group and with the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary staff you could see affection.
We went with a half day tour. I think we left around 7 in the morning and we were back 3/4 in the afternoon. This was enough for us but you can do a whole day and I think a couple day camp with a stay there overnight but with Amelia (6 year old child) we really couldn’t do this.
So Thailand. Awesome awesome awesome country. We LOVE IT. If you go to Chiang Mai, make sure you go to the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary. There are apparently around 40 elephant camps in Chiang Mai but from what we read online this seemed the best and it really was the perfect experience for us.
