Earlier this year we made “Home Style Chinese Cooking” (so so annoying the publisher always makes us make a book in the winter when the light is rubbish) but in the last couple months we’ve really said to ourselves “we have to photograph more food, food = money” and this is true. True because Liv worked as a chef for many years and now she’s an illustrator and food writer and she’s making way more money from her latter career than when she worked as a chef.
Something I find really scandalous is for the last year of her degree, which she graduated from in the summer of 2016, she worked part time at a local Sainsbury’s stacking shelves and helping out yet she made around £1 an hour more than she did working as a fine dining chef. Yes no matter where you work you get the occasional arsehole customer but there’s no pressure, no long shitty hours and it pays more. I’ve done some restaurant work recently and apparently there aren’t enough chefs to fill positions throughout Edinburgh. Not surprising really!
But back on track, here is some of the food I have photographed in the last month or so. We’ve changed our style of food photography recently and in some ways our style know is a rebellion over what we’ve both had to do before. Our publisher always insisted on using low angles. A lot of the time we really felt the angles were dreadful so all of the photos included in this article are looking down at food and for the dishes here it really worked.
This is not to say this will work for every dish we photograph but for these dishes it worked perfectly. If you want to learn more about each recipe, head over to my wife’s blog through the above link.
