Goodbye Lothian Chambers

Goodbye Lothian Chambers. On the 29th of December I photographed my last wedding of 2017 and the second to last ever wedding at Lothian Chambers. I’m actually a little disappointed I didn’t photograph the last wedding ever there but if you’ve read about Lothian Chambers on the internet or followed my blog you’ll know that Lothian Chambers is being turned into a French embassy/consulate/library/educational centre.

I feel really sad this venue is disappearing as my first non-family wedding was captured at Lothian Chambers and I’ve photographed dozens and dozens of weddings there, so I have a real emotional attachment.

So due to the timings on the day of the wedding I arrived super early and had a chat with the new chap on reception about the changes then had a walk around the building and took some photos. I’ve left some notes on the photos but it was really weird walking around and seeing the changes and again I feel really sad.

But, with this transition and recent changes with my own business and life I’ve decided to make changes to this website. I haven’t updated this website for over a month as I’ve been really busy with my university studies and I’ve also been super busy with work. Over the last three or so years my work has been about 80% commercial and 20% wedding and I love all the different kinds of photography I do but I’ve decided to build a website dedicated just to wedding photography and turn this website into a commercial photography website. I’ll still write about personal photography projects but part of the reason for the change is my change in attitude towards work and my new business venture.

When I started working as a photographer I was really quite nervous at first and acted over professionally towards people. Several hundred weddings later and even more commercial jobs completed, I like to have a lot of fun with people. I joke around and I act like myself. I treat commercial clients, wedding clients all the same. On the wedding side of things Chris Radley Photography doesn’t suit me anymore.

Liv as you may know is a professional illustrator and designer and I’m transitioning into a web developer (something I’ve been doing for 10 years but decided to get serious about roughly 2 years ago). With this we’re in the process of setting up a design company called Joyful Original (Ltd). This will incorporate web design, illustration, branding, marketing and of course photography for small to medium size businesses. Liv Wan Illustration and Chris Radley Photography will fall under this company and in the next couple of weeks Joyful Weddings will go live. I like my weddings and my wedding style to bring joy to people so I’ll very soon have a website dedicated to just wedding photography. So that’s it folks, no more new weddings on this website and expect a redesign late January/early February.

But back to the main topic of this article. Goodbye Lothian Chambers. I’ve loved working there, I’ve met hundreds of really amazing people and I feel Edinburgh council have made a huge mistake selling the building but this is a council that decided to build an utterly shit tram system amongst other things.
