Loony Dook Edinburgh 2016

Loony Dook Edinburgh 2016

Happy New Year! For the first time in as many years as I can remember I had a complete break this late December. After Christmas I didn’t photograph any weddings, cars or anything and it was wonderful having a complete break. We stayed at home this Christmas but two days later after Liv finished working in the morning we drove down to a very flooded Yorkshire where we stayed until the 31st. The drive back including a big food shop, a burger king break on the way back and dinner pickup from our favourite Chinese restaurant in Edinburgh took 5 hours so I was pretty tired but thankfully one of the coolest (literally) events you can visit in the Edinburgh area, the Loony Dook Edinburgh 2016, took place much later than normal on the 1st January.

Every year in South Queensferry, which is on the North West side of Edinburgh and on the shores of the Forth bridges, the Loony Dook is held. For whatever reason in previous years it’s been held in the morning but thankfully this time it was held mid afternoon which allowed me to have a sort out after coming back while my wife Liv worked. We’ve had a really mild winter but this January winter has come with a vengeance so on the day it was about 4C so as spectators we were absolutely frozen.

Just to give you a wee bit of background about the Loony Dook, for the last 30 years people have been taking a New Year dip in the Forth estuary. People turn up in all kinds of fancy dress and they hold a parade along South Queensferry high street followed by a quick dip in the Forth. People go in a shade of pink and come out blue. It’s hilarious to watch but everyone loves it.

At the time of writing this I’ve already photographed my first wedding of the year and I’ve got a whole load of weddings and things to blog on this site. Hope you like the photos below of the Loony Dook
