Newsroom Edinburgh

Newsroom Edinburgh

Around a month ago I took some photos for my favourite pub/restaurant in Edinburgh, the No 1 Grange, then about a week after I photographed a relaunch event for All Bar One on George Street. In a separate booking I was then asked to photograph three restaurants that all reside under the same parent company but all serve quite different food. The first of these restaurants is The Newsroom Bar and Eatery which sits at the top of Leith Street.

The location is interesting as I used to drive past it all the time but Leith Street for the last year has been closed to aid construction of the new St James Centre. I was asked if I could take photos of the exterior of the Newsroom but with it being a sunny day all you could see was building site. Even with polarisers, changing position or coming back at another time, building site. So no go!

I was asked to take photos of the interior of the Newsroom, some cocktails and other drinks, the waiters making some cocktails and lots of food. The first thing I thought was really funny about the Newsroom is what they call the wall of death. Bare in mind the Newsroom has been around for a good few years, they have a wall just inside the entrance that has clippings of loads of celebrities but ironically they’re all dead; David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson are just a few, so everyone calls it the wall of death.

Also just inside the entrance is a huge keg which looks really cool and there’s a nightclub downstairs.

So I’ll let the photos talk for themselves. There are few hero shots (photos looking directly down), some different starters, mains and drinks and I have to say I really liked the food. One of the benefits of doing these kinds of jobs is the food is prepared just for the photos (food gets cold quickly and can’t be reheated for customers) so if it’s not eaten it just gets thrown away. All three of these shoots I brought home a LOT of food. One of the upcoming restaurants, Burgers and Beers, I took home six or seven burgers, two hotdogs and more.
