No 1 The Grange
Easily my favourite pub (stroke) restaurant in Edinburgh is No 1 The Grange. We discovered No 1 The Grange after we moved to Marchmont and my daughter Amelia started to go to ballet. Ballet school is literally just a couple minutes walk down the road so we thought it would be great if we could drop her off then go for a pint and just chill out.
We tried a sports bar just round the corner, but didn’t like it, then we went to No 1 The Grange which is just over the road from the dance school, and what a find. Danny and Ryan bought then reopened the Grange in October 2016 and initially they intended on just opening a pub but they have a kitchen and asked their friend Owen to be their chef. And what a team! Danny and Ryan are super friendly, the pub is friendly, unpretentious and it’s both child and animal friendly. But most importantly the food is seriously wow. We’ve eaten there a good few times and the food is literally Michelin star quality without the Michelin star. It’s awesome.
But praises aside, Danny and Ryan understand the importance of social media and they’re redesigning their website and needed new photos of both the building (interior and exterior) as well as some of the food.
The Food
We discussed how to photograph the food. Owen, the chef, visualises how plates should appear by looking straight down at them. This is how I like to photograph food but I’ll also do some other angles as well.
Burger and chips. Haven’t tried this but it’s a huge portion. A friend tried it and said it was outstanding.
Beer braised lamb with mint. I loved this, seriously delicious!
I forget what kind of fish this was but fish wrapped in bacon with a fishcake. Sauce had capers. Delicious!
Duck with chocolate jus. Delicious. I could eat this many times over!
The Pub/Restaurant
Horseshoe shaped bar in the middle, restaurant area at the bag (to be refurbished at some point) and seating area all around.
