Orange Order Parade Edinburgh Old Town

Orange Order Parade Edinburgh

Right now in Scotland easily the biggest topic of all is the Scottish Referendum. Just a tiny wee bit of history about this, Scotland has been been part of the “United Kingdom” since 1707 but many Scots have been calling for independence for many years and in 2014 they got their referendum.

I certainly have my opinion about whether Scotland should become independent and I won’t discuss them here. Quite frankly I’m absolutely sick to death of hearing about the referendum. I use Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus etc just as much as anyone else and all I see from 90% of my Scottish friends is “referendum, referendum, referendum”. Whether Scotland does go independent or not I’m sure the talk about independence won’t stop but I’ve had enough.

I’ve avoided almost anything to do with the referendum but today I had a wedding at Lothian Chambers (which I’ll post online in a few weeks) and I heard about the Orange Order Parade which is a pro union parade with roughly 15000 people taking part. I arrived in town a little later than planned so I literally walked through the Orange Order Parade but it was an impressive sight.

The Meadows where the parade started is a pretty large area and as you walk into the meadows people were as wide as the meadows. On a note I often park at the NCP in Quartermile (cheapest NCP in town by far) but Lauriston Place was closed off so I ended up parking about half a mile the other side of Marchmont. All of the normal parking spots you can grab at the weekend were gone.

All in all the parade seemed to take around 1-1.5 hours to pass. We could hear it at Lothian Chambers and throughout the ceremony but it was a really cool sight. Here are some image and do click on the first image to see much a much larger version to get an idea of the number of people were there

Today was full of Eastern performers. There were a group of, I’m assuming Japanese, performers dressed up as Geisha’s and a quite funny Chinese-Canadian magician. She did a houdini act and made loads of jokes about white people, not a bad thing at
