Rowantree Edinburgh Wedding

Rowantree Edinburgh Wedding. This August I returned to one of the most difficult wedding venues to photograph but also perhaps the most atmospheric wedding venue of all, the Rowantree on Niddrie Street in Edinburgh’s Old Town.

I’ve written in the past about what a pain in the ass the Rowantree is to photograph due to the lighting in the venue. They use these fluorescent lights which combined with the darkness of the venue makes it really difficult to venue but this time, for whatever reason, the venue seemed to be better lit so it was a little easier.

Technical difficulties aside, it’s still a really awesome venue to work in and this wedding was especially great because I’m friends with the groom and used to work with him a few years ago, so it made the wedding a lot easier. I’d only met Rachel the once before the wedding and we arranged to do preparation shots at the Malmaison Hotel in Leith. The hotel itself is really lovely and sits in a great location that has really great restaurants nearby. Rachel was there on her own so it made taking photos a little different (normally bridal rooms are mental busy with lots of women running around) but it was a nice change and allowed me to be a lot more focused on the bride and get some really great photos.

So to the wedding itself, there were around 40 people at the wedding, which is a perfect number. The ceremony had a couple readings but was perfect in length. Following the ceremony we did a few group shots in the main ceremony room then I took a few photos at the drinks reception. Rachel, Martin and myself then jumped in an uber taxi to go into Old Town where we visited a few spots to take couple photos.

Incidentally this was my first and probably last ride in an uber taxi. Martin uses uber and I like the way the taxi arrived quickly but the driver didn’t know where he was going (even with sat nav) and barely spoke a word of English so when I tried to give him directions (I know the roads around Old Town like the back of my hand) he didn’t understand. Yes we all need to make money but… I’ll be sticking with black cabs in the future.

Following the couples photos everyone sat down for a meal and Martin and Rachel were kind enough to provide me with food (remember folks, it’s a long day and we photographers work really hard) and then there was speeches and the dancing in the evening.

All in all it was a great wedding. A pretty long day but it didn’t feel as long as many big weddings as I know the couple, I was super busy and I love the venue and location. As you’ll also see the Rowantree is one amazing venue!
