The Chapel photographed by London property photographer.
As a London property photographer with nearly 20 years of property photography experience, and having photographed many thousands of properties, it takes a lot to make me go “Wow, this is a stunning property!”. This year I have photographed a few properties that have made me go “Wow, this is a stunning property”. Two of these homes were in Shoreditch, one was a £200 million property in central London and then there is today’s property, which is a converted church.
The owners of this truly incredible property bought it some 20-plus years ago but their needs have changed and they are now looking to sell it. They bought essentially a chapel, kept many original features including the ceiling, the windows, and many pews but then ripped it out and completely modernised it. What’s left is a mixture of the old (the stained glass windows are amazing) but then you have an ultra-modern mezzanine, a modern kitchen, a fabulous bathtub in the main bedroom, and enough details to write a book with. Walking into the building alone was an experience with an absolutely stunning stairwell.
When I was contacted about this job, I received a message saying (not word-for-word but summarised), “I have a unique property, can you call me”. I called that person and they told me it’s a 3500 sq ft church property unlike any other, and it truly is.
So for this job, I was hired to do three things, one take photos, two draw a floorplan and three record a video. This property could only be photographed on one specific day and sod’s law we had the most horrific weather on the day, so the photos alone took two hours to capture. Everything was captured with natural light and some exposures were in the 25-30 second range, so it took a long time. Outside, to give you an idea, I arrived around 3 pm in early September and I was driving with my car lights on, it was that bad!
For the floorplan, I was kindly provided with the architects’ drawings so I was able to take this, and do my own measurements which took a short amount of time to do. For the video, this was a real challenge. Depending on who I’m working with, I may do video tours with an iPhone but with this being a special property and an especially dark property, this required a proper video rig which I do own and use more and more frequently. A video will be shared eventually.
