rowantree edinburgh wedding

Once or twice every year I photograph a wedding at one of Edinburgh’s most atmospheric but difficult venues. The Rowantree which sits on Niddry Street has been used for numerous things over the years including stables for Edinburgh Castle but nowadays it’s an events and wedding venue.

That you get to photograph a wedding in what looks like a cave is awesome. The venue has so much character and events and weddings can be photographed from various angles so it’s really cool but it’s also bit of a nightmare as the venue is so dark and they use really “difficult” fluorescent lights. With the weddings I’ve photographed there before I’ve struggled a wee bit as I don’t really like using artificial light but now I’m using top of the range Nikon cameras the venue is so much easier to photograph.

Hazel and James booked me a good few months before their wedding and after a few meetings their wedding came around right at the end of November. Hazel wanted preparation shots at her families home in the south of Edinburgh so I went to her home, took loads of photos then did a mad sprint to the venue. On arrival I took various shots of people mingling, some pictures of the venue itself and waited for the bride to arrive.

The ceremony was lovely, just the right length and the minister who preceded over the venue was great. One funny thing about the wedding was it was so dark she had to use her mobile phone to illuminate her notes so you can imagine how difficult it was for me.

After the ceremony we did a couple group shots inside and I then took the couple into Old Town to do some couple shots. Following this we headed back to the venue, took some more mingling photos and photos of the piper leading Hazel and James into their wedding breakfast then we stopped for a couple.

Liv (my wife) helped me out that day but when the wedding sat down for their meal I drove her home so she could rescue our babysitter. A bit later I went back to the venue to photograph the evening celebrations.

One of the group shots we had planned during the day was to do a shot of the bride with all the men in kilts and during the day, especially with it being November and getting dark by the time we went out for the couple shots, so later in the evening, after everyone had a few drinks, I took people outside for those group shots and they were absolutely hilarious. I did one shot with everyone looking at me and the second the guys turned around and flashed. I’ve had to blur out at least three sets of nuts for the photo posted below.

So that’s this wedding at the Rowantree. The couple were absolutely lovely, the venue fantastic (but challenging) and with the number of people at the wedding and the venue itself both Liv and I took a LOT of photos.
