Over the last couple years and especially the last year, there’s been a big hoo-haa in the news about the number of properties in Edinburgh being listed on Airbnb. I believe the number of properties in Edinburgh right now being listed on Airbnb is something in the region of 8000, which is an insane number when you consider the population of Edinburgh, and one of the most talked about properties is Upper Bow. Right at the top of Upper Bow one door entrance is literally lined left and right with Airbnb keyboxes.
The whole Airbnb thing puts me in a couple frames of mind. First of all it’s great for work, it provides me with tonnes of work and I do enjoy looking at new properties and photographing them. On the other hand the property market in Edinburgh is utterly shit at the moment. All of the good properties are either holiday lets, astronomically expensive, utterly awful or full of students and let’s not even talk about Brexit.
An example of a combination of the above is my property and area. I live in Marchmont and property rentals are in the region of £1300 a month and a two bedroom flat recently sold for over £500k. Insane! We moved to Marchmont for the local school, James Gillespie’s, but that turned out to be an awful experience (bad bad bad school!) so we would love to move closer to my daughter’s new school but there’s nothing available in the area at all. Crap!
And this brings me to Upper Bow, I’ve photographed a few properties in the building at different stages and they’ve ranged from really tiny and really god awful to this property which is really tiny but really quite nice inside. The owner is from China and he’s renting his property through Guest Ready. While the interior isn’t to my taste I do like that he’s made a really big effort to decorate it and of the many properties I’ve photographed in the immediate area (Upper Bow/Johnston Terrace etc) this is one of the best.
